ZIMSEC O Level Combined Science Notes: Industrial gases

  • Common Industrial gases include:
  • Hydrogen
  • Oxygen
  • Nitrogen
  • Ammonia and
  • Carbon Dioxide
  • These gases have several industrial uses
  • For example oxygen is used in welding and in the oxygen lance process
  • They are therefore actively manufactured
  • Using various industrial processes for example
  • The liquification of air
  • The Haber process
  • and electrolysis

Electrolysis

Electrolysis of water set up

Electrolysis of water set up

  • Electrolyte solutions contain ions that can carry electrical current through the solution
  • An electrolyte is a compound in aqueous form/solution form that allows electricity to pass through it
  • When an electric current is passed through an electrolyte chemical changes can
  • In some electrolytes
  • Result in chemical changes taking place at the electrodes
  • Direct Current is used during the electrolysis process
  • Cathode- is the electrode connected to the negative terminal of the battery
  • The cathode is on the right side in the diagram above
  • Anode-is the electrode connected to the positive terminal of the battery
  • The anode is to the left in the diagram above
  • Electrolysis-the process in which chemical reactions occur when electricity is passed through an electrolyte
