  • It is a process of introducing a new employee to the organisation and
  • Introducing the organisation to the new employee
  • It is considered a form of training
  • Induction is important as it:
    1. Ensures the employee is integrated as quickly as possible within the organisation
    2. That they the employee understands their responsibilities
    3. Ensures the employee learns the relevant aspects of the organisation’s culture, mission and objectives
    4. Makes the new employee feel comfortable, motivated and productive as soon as possible
  • Without induction a new employee will waste valuable time getting acquainted with their new position
  • It might lead to lost productivity, costly mistakes and even high labour turnover
  • A good induction exercise/program covers the following aspects:
  • The conditions of employment e.g. workstation
  • Procedures for leave of absence, absence and holidays
  • Discipline and grievance procedures
  • Time breaks
  • Welfare issues
  • The organisation, its history and culture
  • The geography of the workplace
  • Key personnel within the organisation
  • Safety in the workplace
  • Training arrangements if any
  • The payment system used by the organisation
  • Trade unions and staff associations
