Female reproductive system

  • Ovaries-there are two ovaries
    • Their function is to produce and release ova (plural of ovum) during ovulation
    • Ovaries also secrete the hormones oestrogen and progesterone
    • these control the development of the ova and the thickening of the uterus lining
  • Oviduct/Fallopian tube-is for the passage of ova from the ovaries to the uterus.
  • Fertilisation takes place in the fallopian tubes
  • Uterus/womb-is a muscular chamber where the foetus/embryo develops
  • Cervix-is a ring of muscles at the neck of the uterus, which closes during pregnancy
  • and dilates during birth
  • Vagina-for the passage of sperms into the uterus and is also the birth canal
  • Fertilisation-it refers to the fusion of the male and female gametes (sex cells) nuclei to form a zygote
  • It takes place in the oviduct/fallopian tube
